How to Prep for Your Cape Cod Senior Portrait Session
What to wear, how to feel your best, and everything you need to know before your senior session on Cape Cod.
Your senior portraits are about more than just pretty photos — they’re about capturing who you are at this once-in-a-lifetime moment. Whether you're dreaming of sandy toes and sea breeze or a more polished, editorial vibe, here’s how to feel confident and camera-ready for your session.
1. What to Wear: Outfit Tips for a Flawless Look
When it comes to choosing outfits, think classic, comfortable, and true to you — with a hint of elevated style. We want your personality to shine through, while also creating images that feel timeless.
If you're bringing one outfit:
Most girls choose a dress — either flowy or structured. White is always a favorite for its clean, elegant feel (and it looks stunning against Cape Cod backdrops).
For multiple outfits, I recommend:
A white dress – perfect for the beach and a classic choice that feels light, airy, and sophisticated.
A colorful or patterned dress – something that reflects your style, whether playful or bold.
A jeans + shirt combo – think elevated casual: denim paired with a cute top or light sweater for a more relaxed look.
Pro Tips:
Avoid loud logos or neon colors — they can distract from you.
Be mindful of ruffles — they photograph beautifully but can be tricky in the wind.
Choose textures over trends: cotton, linen, lace, and soft knits photograph beautifully.
Make sure outfits are comfortable and allow movement — you’ll be sitting, walking, and twirling.
Try everything on ahead of time to ensure a great fit and that nothing shows (like bra straps, tags, or wrinkles).
2. Hair, Makeup, and Nails: The Finishing Touches
Hair: Come with clean, styled hair — whatever makes you feel most like you. Soft waves, curls, or sleek styles all work beautifully.
Makeup: A light, natural look enhances your features and photographs beautifully. Even if you don’t wear much day-to-day, a little concealer, blush, and mascara can make a big difference.
Nails: Your hands will be in some of the photos! Opt for neat, neutral nails or a simple polish. (No chipped polish, please!)
Optional: Want to treat yourself to a little glam? I’m happy to recommend trusted hair and makeup artists on Cape Cod.
3. Accessorize (Lightly)
A few accessories can elevate your look without overwhelming it. Think simple jewelry, a wide-brim hat, or a scarf. If you wear glasses and plan to take them off for a few shots, bring a lens cloth to avoid smudges.
4. Timing & Light: Why Golden Hour Is Everything
I typically schedule sessions in the early evening — about 1–2 hours before sunset — to take advantage of that dreamy, golden Cape Cod light. It flatters every skin tone and gives your portraits a soft, natural glow.
5. Who Can Come With You?
Feel free to bring a parent, sibling, or friend along — not just for support, but even to jump into a few photos if you'd like! If you’d like to include your family or pets, let me know ahead of time so we can plan accordingly.
6. Bring Something That Feels Like You
Whether it's a volleyball, pointe shoes, your favorite book, or even your sketchbook — feel free to bring something that reflects who you are right now.
Props like this can add depth and personality to your gallery, and help tell your story in a way that feels true to you. If there's a sport, hobby, or passion you'd love to highlight, let me know so we can work it into the session naturally.
The goal? Portraits that feel authentic, effortless, and like you at your very best.
7. Mindset: This Is Your Moment
You're not expected to be a model — promise! I’ll guide you through every step, from how to stand to where to look. We’ll keep things relaxed and natural so you can focus on feeling confident and enjoying the experience.
